at endora, a remote iowa town, gilbert grape feels the weight of great responsibilities on him: after his father's suicide his family lives in a state of impending disaster. the mother, a 250-pound woman, spends her days eating and watching television. the minor son, arnie, is a disabled person in need of continuous assistance. the sisters amy and ellen seem to be locked in their impenetrable world. poor gilbert, a grocery store clerk, can do nothing but sacrifice himself full time. one day, however, a vagrant named becky wanders the streets of the town and manages to revolutionize the horizons and expectations of the young.
