in the immediate post-war naples, captain prescott attended a local girl, anna, more for fun than anything else. she, on the other hand, falls in love to the point of following him wherever he is transferred for reasons of service. when the captain makes her understand, humiliating her, that for him it was only a pastime, she kills him.
