euliss 'sonny' dewey is a pentecostal preacher who one day discovers he is betrayed by his wife. he reacts by getting drunk and hitting her lover with a baseball bat. wanted by the police, he took refuge in a small town in louisiana and, renamed himself 'the apostle', tried to redeem himself by building a memorable 'house of the lord'.
