Breakaway (1974)

on september 9, 1999, commissioner simmonds sends a new commander, john robert koenig, to the alpha lunar base to investigate the mysterious epidemic that is decimating the pilots destined for the meta mission, one of the most important ever made. with the help of scientist victor bergman and dr. helen russell, koenig discovers that things are not like simmonds had made him believe: the lightness and cynicism of bureaucrats in stowing nuclear waste on the satellite have turned him into the biggest bomb ever built man. four days later the unimaginable happens: a nuclear explosion propels the moon out of its orbit condemning the inhabitants of the alpha lunar base to wander in space.
