in monte carlo, a shy company lady knows a rich and beautiful widower, maxim dewinter, and marries him without thinking twice. once in his castle, at manderley, the idyll breaks down: impressed by the housekeeper, the newlyweds are obsessed by the memory of maxim's first wife, rebecca, who died in mysterious circumstances, and risks falling into madness. until the body of rebecca arrives from the sea and maxim is investigated for murder.
