a blacksmith, who honestly works in a small town in the south, is unjustly accused of a murder so that, having left his family, he embarks illegally for south america. when he is there, a short time later, he learns that he has been found innocent, but when he returns to italy, a woman, in love with him, reports him to the police as an opium smuggler. the false statement cost him ten years in prison, discounted which he returns to italy to discover that one of his ancient persecutors tries to prevent his daughter's marriage with a good young man. in hatred, the man intends to take justice into his own hands, but during a religious service at the sanctuary of montevergine, the madonna comes to his aid and induces him to forgive him.
