following the denunciation of envious and subtle rivals, with the help of a corrupt magistrate, a young naval captain is accused of treason and imprisoned in the fortress of the island of if. added to this misfortune is the death of his father's heartbreak and the loss of his beloved girlfriend, coveted by one of his false friends. in prison the young captain, in the throes of depression and dismay, accidentally meets another prisoner, his cell neighbor, an abbot who, before expiring, confides to him the existence of a fabulous treasure and gives him a map to get hold of it . since the prison regulations stipulate that the deceased be closed in a sack and thrown into the sea, the young man replaces the abbot's corpse, regaining his freedom. the rescue comes to him from a ship that takes him aboard and where, thanks to his nobility of spirit, he gains the trust of the captain and his people who lead him to the island of montecristo where, following the map given to him by the abbot , finds the treasure that makes it become so rich that it also gives it the right to change its identity. the former captain of the navy becomes the count of montecristo.
