The Charterhouse of Parma (1948)

movies in two episodes: 'the shadow of the patibolo' and 'lovers without hope'. after completing his studies, fabrizio deldongo took refuge in the quiet of parma, near his aunt, duchess of sanseverino. costei, who abandoned her friend mosca, refuses the insistent courtship of prince ernesto. fabrizio, implicated in a murder, is sentenced to twenty years in prison. in the cell he often sees clelia, daughter of the governor, who helps him escape, but then is forced by his father to marry a rich nobleman. fabrizio, who took refuge in piedmont after learning of his marriage, returns to parma where he is arrested. the aunt, to save him, gives herself to prince ernesto, who dies shortly afterwards. fabrizio, finally free, retires to the certosa of parma, clelia stays with her husband and her aunt resumes attending moscow.
