mathieu blumenthal, a jewish banker, was arrested with some comrades during the second world war while hiding in a synagogue. deported to a concentration camp, he manages to escape with ester, a girl he fell in love with, by blowing up a bridge. since his gesture is likely to bring five hundred innocents to the firing squad, the jew prefers to pay the conviction himself, which is not so much the nazis, but is inflicted by christ on the wandering jew he represents.
