rise and decay of julien sorel who from a peasant becomes a clerk and therefore a lover of the mayor's wife. in paris, where he fled to avoid scandals, he joined the noble world thanks to an engagement with a titled girl. but the ancient lover, who harbored revenge, betrays him. julien kills her and goes up to the scaffold.
