naples under spanish domination: the governor fizzed over the miller's beautiful wife and had him arrested in order to replace him during the night. but the miller manages to escape and his wife, with a stratagem, escapes the governor's closed court after having signed the order to release her husband. the situations are reversed: with the complicity of the governor, the miller takes the place of the governor who, when he returns at night to the palace, is treated by everyone as if he were the miller. once the misunderstandings have been clarified, everything returns to normal.
