the noble owner of a castle suddenly loses his reason because of a fall from a horse. his distraught mind makes him believe he is henry iv, so he makes himself revered and paid by everyone, served by his servants to perfection, even neglecting the beloved woman who hopes for his recovery. after the poor woman's death, the nobleman regains his lucidity, but returns to be unreasonable when he realizes that his ancient rival intrudes on his affections courteously courting the daughter of the deceased woman. taken by the desire for revenge, the nobleman kills him.
