canal grande (1943)

in venice, in 1881, the town hall approved the regular use of the vaporetti on the grand canal. this innovation is opposed by all the gondoliers, among whom the most ardent is also against the son who not only does not take sides with their cause, but leaves his girlfriend to run after a capricious foreigner and become his lover. in order to live decorously, the young man agrees to be a helmsman on water buses, earning him the nickname of "traitor" on the part of his fellow gondoliers. in the end he will regain the respect of all by winning the regatta in place of his injured father and he will find the ex-girlfriend who forgives him his escapade.
