a fishmonger, with a sales counter at the roman market in campo de'fiori, falls in love with an elegant lady and would be willing to marry her even if the woman has a child she had from a man who abandoned her. one day the woman ends up in jail for having hosted an illegal gambling den in her home and the fishmonger looks after the child with a true father tenderness. out of prison, the woman goes to take the child back and shortly afterwards has the surprise of the return of the man who had left her and who wants to see her again together with the baby. the woman leaves and the embittered fishmonger returns to the market where he finds a fruit vendor, in love with him, and understands that she is the woman of his life.
