melvin is a new york writer of romance novels who suffers from obsessive-manic type disorders; but it is also strongly selfish and racist towards blacks, homosexuals, old ladies and dogs. eternally dissatisfied, he finds his utmost satisfaction in hurting and offending the people around him. carol is a waitress at a cofee shop where the writer usually eats breakfast. he falls madly in love with her so that in the end, for his sake, he learns to be kind to his homosexual neighbor, simon, and also to love his beloved little dog verdell.
