a young neapolitan composer, having arrived in florence, happens to be in a cafe, a gathering place for liberal exponents and drawn by the circumstances, he composes the anthem of the volunteers. later he falls in love with a pretty girl, but unfortunately ends up in jail accused of resistance to the police. forced to go away he went to milan where he found fortune and success, while still thinking of the girl from florence. he returns later, finds the girl again, but a series of misunderstandings and accidents puts the two lovers in open and proud disagreement. everything, however, sits down and the young man leaves for the war of independence, accompanied by his hymn.
