when kurt gerstein, an ss officer and a fervent christian, realizes that the nazis are planning extermination, he tries to make the whole world know about it. the same battle is also fought by richard, a jesuit from a noble roman family, who works at the apostolic nunciature in germany and tries to convince the ecclesiastical hierarchy of the need to do something.
